Abdominoplasty complications can be avoided and they rarely occur in successful procedures. However, it is still essential for patients to know these complications to be able to understand and prepare themselves before undergoing abdominoplasty.
In plastic surgery, abdominoplasty is the process by which excess fat and loose skin are removed to achieve flatter and firmer tummy or abdomen. People who lost a lot of weight and women who gave birth are the usual candidates for abdominoplasty.
In rare cases, abdominoplasty may cause complications and risks. These are usually attributed to the overall health of the patient as well as unsuccessful execution of the procedure. Nevertheless, it happens rarely and the chances are quite slim.
Common Abdominoplasty Complications and Risks
Abdominoplasty complications may include pain and tenderness of the abdominal area after the procedure. The level of pain and tenderness may vary from one patient to another. In rare cases, patients may experience severe pain and swelling.
As tissues and nerves repair, the presence of tenderness around the operated area cannot be avoided. However, as mentioned earlier, the severity in some patients may occur due to the complications that follow abdominoplasty surgery.
Swelling around the operated and genital areas may occur. The genitals may appear bruised with swelling.
Hematoma or excessive bleeding may also occur in case of abdominoplasty complications. Seroma or excessive fluid build-up under the skin (of the operated area) may also be present in case of complications.
Fat necrosis may also be present in abdominoplasty complications. This occurs when fat cells lose blood flow. Fat cells are living cells and if there is no blood flow, they may die and cause fat necrosis. The liquefied fat cells can harden overtime underneath the skin.
Abdominoplasty complications can happen rarely. A good plastic surgeon will always discuss the pros and cons of abdominoplasty, or any type of plastic surgery for that matter, to give patients the chance to think and plan before they undergo the procedure.
