Liposuction

Liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures. The main goal of liposuction is to achieve the required and appropriate body contour of the patient.

However, it is not a total weight loss program that most people would think of. Weight loss programs such as weight management, weight training, exercises and others can help support an individual's goal of getting in shape and can work best in conjunction with liposuction.

Liposuction works best on areas that have excess fat. A localized liposuction treatment can help the patient achieve a contoured body by eliminating the unwanted fats on specific areas of his/her body.

Weight loss should be addressed first before undergoing liposuction. Plastic surgeons will advice their patients to lose weight first before addressing the unwanted fats in their bodies.

The procedure

Liposuction is done under general anesthesia. The procedure requires an operating theater in a hospital or a specially-equipped clinic. A special suctioning tube, called cannula, is used to suck out the excess fat under the skin.

Fat suctioning can be done in different techniques. One of those techniques is called the tumescent liposuction whereby a fat liquefying agent is injected on the area to be suctioned. The liquefied fat is easily sucked out using the cannula.

In liposuction, only limited amount of fat is recommendable for removal. Any excess or above the limit can be dangerous to the patient since this involves blood loss that can cause other severe health issues. Another effect of excessive fat lost is dimpling of the suctioned area.

Liposuction risks and complications

Liposuction involves blood loss, complications to anesthesia, pain, swelling and bruising.

Patients with good health conditions may encounter little or no complications at all. A pre-liposuction medical check-up can help determine if a patient is suitable to undergo this procedure.

Patients with good skin tone or good skin elasticity can expect better results. Patients with bad skin tone may require skin tightening to correct the issue.

Finding a good plastic surgeon to do the procedure is vital in achieving good results. Careful planning and discussing all the pros and cons of liposuction can help a patient in making a final decision.
