A rhinoplasty is a type of plastic surgery that focuses on the improvement of an individual's nose. There are two types of rhinoplasty patients: one who wants to improve the physical appearance of his/her nose, and one who needs to improve the function of his/her nose.
Rhinoplasty is also known as "nose job". The function of a rhinoplasty as an aesthetic plastic surgery procedure is to enhance the shape and the proportion of the nose based on the patient's facial features.
If rhinoplasty is sought to improve the function of the patient's nose, he/she can have the opportunity to get 2 services in 1- improvement of the physical appearance and the functionality of his/her nose in general.
A bit of history
Rhinoplasty was first developed by Sushruta (500 B.C.), an Indian physician who is also regarded as the "Father of Plastic Surgery". Rhinoplasty was performed by Sushruta as a reconstructive surgery procedure to patients who had amputated noses due to criminal punishment.
Rhinoplasty procedure
Rhinoplasty is done by reducing the dorsal bone of the nose. The nasal tip cartilage is then re-set and refined to improve the appearance on the outside.
A typical rhinoplasty procedure can be done with local or general anesthesia, depending on the preference of the patient and the recommendation of the plastic surgeon.
The incisions are made inside the nostrils. There may also be tiny incisions on the skin that separates the nostrils. The plastic surgeon will first separate the soft tissues before reshaping the bone and cartilage of the nose.
Rhinoplasty procedure is not considered as a very painful surgery. It takes only a few hours for the procedure to take place and recovery time at home usually requires a week.
The external sutures can be removed after 4-5 days. The external cast can be removed after a whole week. Bruising, swelling and some pain may be present during the first few days. Prescription pain relievers should be taken to ease the pain and swelling during recovery.
Shifting and settling of the nose can be experienced during the first year. It is quite normal and it will disappear afterwards.
Rhinoplasty may pose some risks, as mentioned above, there is pain, swelling and bruising during the first few days after the procedure. However, rhinoplasty is considered as a safe procedure in general.
